Protecting Your “hot” Fur Baby

It’s HOT!

I know I worry about the heat with my corgi, Rylee. I mean, he’s only got 2 coats that he can’t take off when it gets too warm. So, we keep him as comfortable as we would keep ourselves. And yes, he IS spoiled. But that’s not the point.

The point is, when it gets hot outside, we need to take precautions to help our fur babies be comfortable and safe! A couple easy tips that we do for our corgi - simple and easy to do. Put a small kiddy pool out filled with cool water. They’ll love playing it and it feels good. Wet a towel with cold water and lay it in a shade. They’ll enjoy laying in the coolness while chillin’ in a shade.

These are just a few things we do for Rylee - aside from keeping him inside with the AC as much as possible. Of course, he wants to go out to bark and rule the world, but we keep it to a minimum.

Extreme Heat: 8 Ways to Protect Your Pets:

  • Offer plenty of fresh, cool water

  • Run the AC; do not rely on just a fan

  • Make sure any pets in cages are away from all windows. Pull the shades to keep the heat out

  • Brush them often to remove old, excessive hair

  • If your pet begins to overheat, slowly cool them down and contact your vet

  • Keep a closer eye on pets susceptible to heatstroke including:

    a. Brachycephalic breeds like Pugs, Bulldogs, French Bulldogs and Boston Terriers
    b. Pets with heart issues
    c. Overweight pets
    d. Very young or very old pets

  • Remember humidity adds to the overall heat index so be extra vigilant!

  • Know your pet so you notice if they are not drinking enough water and whether they are overheating

I hope these tips will help you - even though I’m sure you already got this. ;)
