We Got A Picky Eater Too

I can’t tell you how many times over the years I’ve heard people say that corgis LOVE to eat. I’ve had 2 corgis in my lifetime - one, I don’t recall eating THAT much and the other (who lives with me now) doesn’t seem to be a big eater. Now, in defense of those who have told me this over the years, they may not even be talking about dog food. They might have been saying corgis love to eat HUMAN food. But they didn’t say that. I just figured they love to eat dog food.

Remember Rylee? Well, he is one of the most pickiest eaters I’ve ever known. Including myself! haha My kids will tell you that mom doesn’t like anything “good”. In MY defense, what they call “good” I call “yucky”. ha So when Rylee gets fed breakfast or dinner and he’s displeased with his meal, he lets us know by pushing his dish around the laundry room or flipping it with his nose. He doesn’t flip it all the way over and make a mess (phew!), he just lifts it and drops it - to make lots of noise. - to share how unhappy he is with our choice of meal for him. Anyone else have this issue??

It’s taken us 4 years to find a dog food he would actually eat. We tried so many different kinds of brands both canned and dry. We’ve added veggies, egg, or berries to his food to get him to eat it. Nothing was working - so we went to the more expensive brands. This worked for a while, but then he got bored of that too — AND it got expensive!

One day, I was sharing with a couple of my girl friends what we’ve been dealing with for so long. They gave me a baggie of the dry food they feed their dogs. It was a larger kibble. I thought maybe just the kibble itself would make him happy. Plus, if I tell him how much Ellie and Emerson love it - he’ll eat it, right?! Right.

So we gave him the sample kibble over the next day or so. HE ATE IT! I was SO happy to finally find something this little weirdo would eat. Immediately, I talked to my friends again to see how to get our own bag of this stuff. Come to find out we can get it from our vet. Great! So we ordered a big ‘ol bag of “keep makin’ mama happy” food for Rylee. This bliss lasted several more days… then he started becoming uninterested — again. (ugh!)

I don’t know what inspired me to try this… but for one of his meals, I added a splash of water, tossed it around in the kibble, then sprinkled a little cheese on it. Ya know - just the grated cheese you buy in the bag from Winco. He scarfed his food right up. YES! I DID IT! I solved the mystery! AND… its a hell of a lot cheaper! haha

In the end, I’ll admit that he doesn’t get excited every single day about it. There are days when we change it up with pieces of deli meat or a piece of breakfast sausage. But for the most part, he’s consistent and we’ve stopped scrambling to find another food.

I guess the moral of the story is… if you have a picky eater… maybe just try a pinch of cheap cheese on the kibble? ;-)

Stay tuned for future stories of inspiration, goofiness, and fur baby antics! Appreciate you being here! =)
